About Pugh's
Pugh’s have been supplying Cardiff and surrounding areas with horticultural products, plants and sundries since the 1930’s. Sidney Pugh prior to the Second World War established Wenallt Nurseries in Rhiwbina. This was very much along the lines of a conventional market garden/small holding producing bedding plants, fruit and vegetables. The business later expanded to include fruit and vegetables and even included a small dairy
With Cardiff expanding Morganstown, Radyr was considered as an area of great potential for a horticultural business especially with the development of the Castle View housing estate. With the site secured, ‘Tynant Nurseries’ was opened opposite the Tynant Inn and the nursery soon built up a thriving trade as interest in gardening developed. Winnie Pugh joined Colin and they set about developing the nursery into the foundations of the modern Garden Centre concept, especially as the trend became to selling plants in containers as apposed to ‘bare root’.
The sheer diversity of any garden centre made the family question whether we could give our customers the best in all areas. This has led to the introduction of stand-alone businesses instead of departments and the introduction of new businesses to create a unique concept of "Pugh’s Garden Village", which we think, describes our site better. As Pugh’s becomes the Garden Centre element of a diverse range of home’s and garden based outlets customers can enjoy a relaxed and unique experience. As our about Pugh’s web pages develop we will be introducing a much more detailed history of Pugh’s as a business serving Cardiff and South Wales for a number of decades should any customer or supplier have any memories they would like to share please contact us via this website.
