THINGS TO DO IN JANUARY
January is the ideal time to move shrubs if required. Choose the new location and prepare the hole, digging compost deeply into it. Remove the shrub from its existing location, ensuring that you retain as large a root ball as possible.
Plant the shrub in the new hole, water well and mulch with bark or compost.
In inclement weather move containerised shrubs under cover, but don't forget about them - out of sight should not mean out of mind!
Extend the lifespan of your winter-flowering houseplants by placing them in a suitable position. Ensure there is plenty of light and protection from draughts. Equally do not place them in positions that are too dry or hot.
Even in January your lawn may still need attention. Rake up any fallen leaves not forgetting those located in 'hidden' positions such as under hedges and shrubs. As well as making the lawn more attractive, this exercise will remove convenient 'winter residences' for slugs and snails.
Periodically check your stored bulbs for signs of rot or disease. Remove affected bulbs and use sulphur powder as a preventative measure.
January is the time to start thinking about your seeds for the spring. Pop into your local garden centre and ask to look at their catalogues. They will be only too pleased to take your orders!
Happy gardening!
